The 6th International Symposium-cum-Training Course on Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (MMDR-6) was inaugurated on November 6, 2017. The four days International Symposium-cum-Training was organized by the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi in collaboration with the ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF), with the support of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, French Embassy Pakistan and many other local and international partners. One of the prime objectives of this symposium was to bring together the leading experts in the field of molecular medicine from all around the world. About 100 scientists from 30 different countries and 500 scholars from across Pakistan attended this mega event.

The symposium included lectures by eminent scientists and poster presentations by the researchers. The training sessions focused on developing concepts of molecular medicine and its applications in understanding diseases at the molecular levels. HEC Chairman Prof. Dr Mukhtar Ahmed inaugurated the international symposium as the Chief Guest. President ECOSF Prof. Dr Manzoor H. Soomro was especially invited in the inaugural ceremony. However, on his behalf, Engr. Khalil Raza, Scientific Officer ECOSF read out the congratulatory message of Prof. Soomro. It is important to note that ECOSF sponsored the participation of scientists from the ECO region in the symposium. During the event, Engr. Khalil had an opportunity to interact with participating scientist from Iran and Azerbaijan.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhary - Director ICCBS in his welcome remarks appreciated the cooperation and collaboration of ECOSF extended to the ICCBS for organizing this conference. He thanked all the participating international and national scientists for their participation and making this a very successful event. Prof. Chaudhary said this international conference was aimed to extend understanding and appreciation of the emerging field of molecular medicine and drug research in Pakistan in collaboration with leading scientific organizations of the world.

Engr. Khalil Raza read out the message of President ECOSF Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro, wherein he appreciated the efforts undertaken by the leadership of ICCBS by attracting an excellent pool of scientists and experts from all over the world to disseminate and exchange the cutting edge research in the field of molecular medicine. Prof. Soomro in his message assured full cooperation of ECOSF to the ICCBS and organizing partners to promote scientific and technological research in key emerging areas in the ECO region. He also proposed to establish an ECO Network of Institutions of Chemical and Biological Sciences for Drug Development for promotion of research and cooperation in the ECO Region.

Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman Patron-in-Chief ICCBS, in his address stressed over the need for developing quality human resources to combat various challenges. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman said the capacity building in chemistry is particularly vital to attain desired progress in the country. He added that the national capacity in chemical sciences is vital for value addition, poverty alleviation and promotion of exports. Prof. Rehman said that this is a great opportunity for all the participating scientists and experts and it would lead to developing a potential collaboration and establishing linkages among the leading organizations working in the molecular medicine and drug research.

Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Chairman HEC, in his remarks as the Chief Guest, congratulated the conference organizers on holding this symposium on an important subject. He said the government of Pakistan is fully committed to provide quality education in Pakistan. He said the HEC aims to establish at least one quality educational institution in each district by 2019 to provide quality education at doorsteps.
